'These islands are connected to Guernsey, yet not. Their remoteness intrigues me and at times intimidates. An evening seascape serves as a reminder of those emergency hospital dashes, the cancellation of ships…it is at these times that the islands stand alone.'

'It is here, either returning from Sark, Herm or the mainland that I feel a great sense of being centred and that all shall be well. Navigation is essential here, as a port it becomes a fulcrum for our continued journeys, both physical and emotional.'

'The ceremony of the Blessed Flag of Guernsey and the flag itself is for me, the soul of Guernsey. With one glance we are reminded of Guernsey’s history as an island under siege and its resilience against its foes. There is power and dignity here.'

'I find the rocky outcrops at Perelle Bay to be a wonderful visual metaphor for our internal and external lives. Watching the tide cover and uncover the rocky shelves perfectly illustrates how one often doesn’t appreciate the hidden traumas of others and sometimes our own existences.'

'Renoir’s painted this scene in 1883 during a period of huge geo-political change. Charles Darwin had just died, leaving the church in turmoil and electrically based technology was becoming more widespread. In 2022, we continue to live during huge global shifts. It is stabilising to appreciate that our landscape remains mostly the same and can embrace us in times of turmoil.'

'These islands are connected to Guernsey, yet not. Their remoteness intrigues me and at times intimidates. As someone from the mainland who has easy access to hospitals, shops, libraries etc, the populations of these islands resilience and self sufficiency inspires.'

'With the nearby prehistoric structures and Napoleonic forts, the beautiful white sands belie Pembroke Bay and L’Ancresse Common’s history of defence and protection. This is a destination where the stresses of modern-day life can be filtered, bordered by motifs of past struggles that have been transcended.'
